10 Best Dog Breeds for Active People
Is there anything more “paw-some” than being active with your dog?
From walks around the block to hiking trails, running, swimming, camping, paddle boarding, and more, spending quality time with your dog is a great way to bond – and stay fit!
But just like us humans, dogs have different activity levels.
Here at Leash Links, our canine experts know how important it is to choose a dog breed that matches your lifestyle. That’s why we have created a list of the 10 best dog breeds for active people.
Let’s dive in.
- Golden Retriever
First up is the family-friendly Golden Retriever. Known for their happy-go-lucky attitude, this is a dog who is delighted to tag along on any and all outdoor adventures. They also excel at obedience, agility, and are natural swimmers.
A great pick for active people constantly on the move!
- Labrador Retriever
Second, we have the enthusiastic Labrador Retriever. Like their cousin above, Labs require at least one hour of high-quality physical activity per day. In fact, the American Kennel Club classifies this breed as “extremely high energy.”
- Siberian Husky
Looking for a beautiful dog? Those who are active (and don’t mind vaccumming up shed fur) will adore the intelligent, vocal, and oh so playful Siberian Husky! Bonus: if you live in a colder climate, this breed can handle winter activities such as snowshoeing and sledding.
- Border Collie
Next, speaking of smart dogs, let’s not forget the Border Collie. This breed regularly wins agility and obedience competitions, and it’s no wonder why. They are athletic enough to jump through hoops, weave in and out of poles, and run up and down ramps.
This makes them ideal for active people interested in competiting with their dog.
- Jack Russell Terrier
So far, Leash Links has recommended several medium to large breed dogs. However, what about smaller ones? If you want an active dog who weighs less than 22 pounds, check out the Jack Russel Terrier. Despite their tiny size, this breed will gladly chase a ball for hours on end.
- Bernese Mountain Dog
In the number six spot on our list, we have the regal Bernese Mounatin Dog. Originally used as a farming and herding dog in Switzerland, nowadays these gentle giants still do best with an active lifestyle that involves walks, runs, and lots of free time to sniff and explore.
- Poodle
Did you know? Poodles are also a fantastic dog breed for active people. Available in three sizes (toy, miniature, and standard) these pups are the opposite of lazy. They were once hunting dogs and still love racing through fields, jumping into water, and need lots of mental stimulation to be content inside the house.
- Dalmatian
Of my spots! 101 Dalmatians had the right idea when they introduced this unique dog breed to the world. But many dog enthusiasts don’t realize that in addition to those cute black spots, Dalmatians are also great exercise buddies. They require two hours per day…minimum!
- German Shepherd
Then there is the German Shepherd. This is a working dog through and through. From police and military work to search and rescue, German Shepherds are strong, muscular, and agile. As a family dog, this breed is both active and highly trainable. As a result, they will bond extremely closely with family members.
- French Bulldog
Lastly, it may surprise you to see the French Bulldog on the list. Believe it or not, these wrinkly little dogs enjoy living an active lifestyle, too. While certainly not as energetic as a Golden Retriever or as graceful as a Poodle, Frenchies are still a good choice. They love tagging along for a paddleboard ride and going for a run in the dog park.
Just be careful not to overdo it. Their flat faces can make breathing and overheating problematic.
